You Have A Besetting Sin!
Hebrews 12: 1

by Robert Brooks

Introduction:
As ministers we are always looking for a new spin on the teachings of the Bible.  We try to move away from the “old timey” preaching against sin.  Perhaps we need to be reminded by the scriptures that we have not changed and we still fight the same battles day by day.  Hebrews 12: 1 assumes everyone has a besetting sin.  What is yours?  You know it; it is obvious.

I. Is it lust?
A. Jesus said, “Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.”  Honesty would prove, I submit, that every normal man has been guilty at some time in his life.  Jimmy Carter was honest!
B. We are informed that pornography is on the increase even among Christians because of easy access on the internet.

II. Covetousness  (wanting what belongs to another for your own).

III. Materialism
There is nothing wrong with things.  Craving too many things is wrong!  Especially when things are put before God.

IV. Anger
A. Proverbs says, “Anger resteth in the bosom of fools.”
B. Ephesians 4: 26  “…let not the sun go down on your wrath.”

V. Complaining
Chronic complaining is a sin.  Israel complained in the wilderness and they were severely punished!

VI. Lying
Such speaks for itself.

VII. Lack of Love for Thy Neighbor (which means for all humanity)
This is a most prevalent besetting sin!

VIII. Gossip
Proverbs 18:8 “The words of a talebearer are as wounds. . . .”

IX. Cheating
A. Cheating in school is cheating oneself as well as being dishonest.
B. Would a Christian dare cheat on his income tax return?

X. Pride
Proverbs says, “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”  Pride is right at the top of the chief sins of mankind!

XI. Profanity
Even some preachers think it smart to curse!

XII. Apathy (lack of zeal)
Jesus vehemently condemned the sin of lukewarmness, saying the lukewarm He would (the Greek literally says) “vomit” out of his mouth.  In other words, it makes Him sick! (Rev. 4: 15 – 16)
Simply not caring is the worst besetting sin of all!
Simple not sharing is also sin.

Conclusion
Perhaps you don’t have a besetting sin – but besetting sins!  This, to be sure, is the reality of the situation with all of us!  We must repent and work hard every day to live the Christ like life – “Looking unto Jesus.” (Hebrews 12: 2)
