The Unfathomableness of God
Key Verse –
“I know that you can do
all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted.” Job 42:2
Study
We have only
spent a brief time looking at the attributes of God. Scripture
gives us a much more complete view of who God is and what He does.
But despite how much we study scripture, we will never be able to
fully understand God.
We cannot
comprehend eternity. We have only a slight grasp of what true love
is because of our limited human comprehension. We can never know
what grace truly is because we will never have to make a sacrifice
like God made of His Son because we will never have a sense of
justice like God has that must be appeased. We will never be able
to show mercy like God has shown.
Still, we were
created in the image of God. Many of our own attributes are a
reflection – albeit a poor reflection – of God’s own attributes.
Even our best attributes are corrupted by sin. Our love is often
self-seeking. Our justice is often vengeful. Our mercy is
incomplete.
As we seek to
become more and more like Christ, we must understand the
completeness of God’s attributes while also understanding that while
we try to live godly lives we can’t fully comprehend who God is.
Job made the
mistake of assuming that He knew who God was and what His plan was.
Although Job is a shining example of how to live a godly life, even
he did not understand the ways of God or to what extent his love and
mercy went. Job’s story is the story of many people and answers the
question of “Why do good things happen to bad people?”
The answer Job
received was not an appeal to human logic. Instead it was a bold
response of “I am God and you are not. You cannot understand me and
have no right to question me.” Although this may not be
satisfactory for non-Christians, as Christians we should accept that
we serve a great God who has our best interests at heart even when
we cannot see or understand His plan.
God is so much
more than we can imagine. But one day we will see Him face to face
and spend eternity with Him. Praise God for his greatness, even if
we can only grasp a small amount of that today.
